We only have one thing to say during this difficult time and that is….PLEASE EMBRACE YOUR LOVED ONES.

The Importance of Good Posture

How many times have you heard that you need to sit up straight? However, the science behind it shows that good posture affects your body more than you think! Good posture means distributing the force of gravity through our body in balance so that no area is over-stressed.
Here are some reasons good posture is so important for your health:
Breathing becomes easier and deeper
When you’re sitting or standing straight, you create an unbroken pathway for air to reach your lungs, letting your breathing become clearer, deeper, and wider. As you slouch, your body relaxes too far and shortens your frontal muscles and tendons. An over relaxed posture restricts the ease and volume of your regular breathing.
Improves circulation and digestion
Proper posture allows the internal organs in the abdomen to assume their natural position without any compression. Bad posture can interfere with the normal flow and function of the gastrointestinal tract. Standing, sitting, and even sleeping in the wrong position can lead to digestive problems ranging from acid reflux to constipation and even to hernias.
Helps your muscles and joints
Good posture keeps your bones and joints in correct alignment so that your muscles are used correctly, decreasing pressure on joints and helping prevent joint pain and even arthritis. Reduce stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together with good posture to minimize the chance of injury. This also prevents muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.
Healthy spine
Back support is important for people who spend many hours sitting in an office chair or standing throughout the day. Slouching over your desk can add strain to muscles and put excessive stress on the spine. Over time, stress from poor posture can change the anatomical characteristics of the spine, leading to constricted blood vessels and compressed nerves.
The first step to good posture is being aware of the problem.  Now that you’re on the right path, try these Pilates exercises to improve your posture and help you to enjoy a better quality of life!

SIT UP! 5 EASY PILATES EXERCISES TO HELP WITH POSTURE

#1 Relaxation Position
This wonderful position can be used to check your alignment, breathing and centering at the start and end of a session. Or you can simply use it for a rejuvenating relaxation when you need to recharge your batteries.Lie on the floor with knees bent and the entire shoulder blade and lower back resting on the floor. Ensure there is no gap between your shoulder blades and the floor. Hold for one minute, pressing the shoulders into the ground.
#2 Spine Curls
Stay in position 1, then raise your bum off the ground slowly, vertebra by vertebra, lengthening, lengthening… Tighten your rear end and hold for five seconds, then release the spine back down slowly, vertebra by vertebra. Repeat five times.
#3 Single Leg Kick
A fabulous exercise to prevent poor posture it also strengthens the buttocks, legs and spine. Lie on your stomach, then raise yourself slowly on your elbows. Whilst there, tighten your core and bend your left leg. Point the toes to the sky and lift your knee off the ground slightly, tensing the rear end. Hold for 30 seconds then switch legs. Repeat 5 times on each side.
#4 Side Reach
Kneel with the legs about one foot apart. Put your left arm straight down your side and raise your right arm. Bend gently from the waist whilst keeping the spine straight and the head up, as though being pulled up by a string. Switch sides. Repeat 5 times. This is a feel good stretch that both works and strengthens the waist.
#5 Waist Twist
The ability to rotate the spine with length is vital to good posture and movement. Stand up with legs slightly parted. Bend your arms at the elbow with the left arm atop the right. Keeping the spine straight and the hips squared, twist to the left and to the right slowly five times. Spiral upwards as you twist. Switch the position of the arms and repeat.

Aging Well

Finding and following your formula for staying healthy as you age.

Staying healthy and feeling your best is important at any age and that doesn’t change just because you have a few more grey hairs. As we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes, including career changes and retirement, children leaving home, the loss of loved ones, and physical changes. How we handle and grow from these changes is the key to staying healthy.  Healthy aging means continually reinventing yourself as you pass through landmark ages such as 50, 60, 70, 80 and beyond. It means finding new things you enjoy, learning to adapt to change, staying physically and socially active, and feeling connected to your community and loved ones. A key ingredient in the recipe for healthy aging is the continuing ability to find meaning and joy in life. As you age, your life will change and you will gradually lose things that previously occupied your time and gave your life purpose. For example, your job may change, you may eventually retire from your career, your children may leave home, or other friends and family may move far away. But this is not a time to stop moving forward. Later life can be a time of exciting new adventures if you let it, remembering to always take time and nourish your spirit.
